An extensive report, written at the request of former Virginia<br \/> Congressman Bobby Scott offers evidence that a continuous, long-term video series like <em><span style=\"color: #8c134b;\"><strong>Think Better,<\/strong><\/span><\/em><br \/> <em><span style=\"color: #8c134b;\"><strong> Live Free<\/strong><\/span><\/em> from <span style=\"color: #7f1145;\"><strong>Freedom From Within<\/strong><\/span> would be essential to the reintegration of both juvenile and adult<br \/> offenders. The reduction of recidivism then saving billions of tax dollars per year and ensuring public<br \/> safely.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot program, a year-long series comprising five weekly half-hour videos (260 sessions in total) will<br \/> build on existing living skills programming. Dr. Faith Witkins Schwartz, chief psychologist to <span style=\"color: #841243;\"><strong>Freedom<\/strong><\/span><br \/> <span style=\"color: #841243;\"><strong> From Within<\/strong><\/span>, projects a 20 percent recidivism reduction for the <em><span style=\"color: #89134a;\"><strong>Think Better, Live Free<\/strong><\/span><\/em> video series.<\/p>\n<p>The core program will focus on living skills programming\u2014cognitive-skills training\u2014will teach offenders<br \/> the thinking or <span style=\"color: #871254;\"><strong>\u201ccognitive skills&#8221;<\/strong> <\/span>they need to correct thinking errors and learn:<\/p>\n<p>\uf0b7 Victim empathy\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Personal responsibility\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Social competence\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Job preparation and training<br \/> \uf0b7 Conflict resolution\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Life-management\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Self-esteem\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Life awareness\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 GED preparation<br \/> \uf0b7 Reading and writing\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Managing emotions\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Language skills\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Accepting rules\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Smiling<br \/> \uf0b7 Appropriate facial gestures\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Body movement\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Politeness\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Consequences of actions<br \/> \uf0b7 Making good decisions\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Good manners\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Greeting someone\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Answering the phone<br \/> \uf0b7 Controlling temper\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Conversation skills\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Good hygiene\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Improved diet\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Dental care<\/p>\n<p>The cognitive approach focuses on faulty thinking that often propels offenders into re-involvement in<br \/> criminal activities. Cognitive treatment equips the offender with alternative thinking skills they need to<br \/> <strong><span style=\"color: #7c074d;\"> avoid criminal choices and remain out of prison.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #9b154f;\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/span> Cognitive approaches developed by world-renowned motivational expert Tony Robbins and the<br \/> Tony Robbins Foundation will generously donate much of the Robbins\u2019 thinking\/behavior-adjustment<br \/> materials\u2014tested by <strong><span style=\"color: #a8144a;\">Freedom From Within<\/span><\/strong> for one year and approved for use in the <span style=\"color: #820654;\"><strong><em>Think Better, Live<\/em><\/strong><\/span><br \/> <span style=\"color: #820654;\"><strong><em> Free<\/em><\/strong><\/span> video series.<\/p>\n<p>Of equal importance, offenders learn <span style=\"color: #93144b;\"><strong>\u201cemotional literacy.\u201d<\/strong><\/span> Emotional literacy is defined by Peter Salovey<br \/> of Yale and John Mayer of the University of New Hampshire as the ability \u201cto monitor and manage one\u2019s<br \/> own feelings, being able to empathize and handle one\u2019s own feelings, being able to empathize and<br \/> handle personal relationships, and be able to harness emotions for positive motivation in doing<br \/> cognitive tasks, including problem solving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The videos also feature live-management skills. Offenders learn education basics like math, spelling,<br \/> writing, geography and reading to prepare for the GED. Business etiquette, manners, dressing for the<br \/> job, body language, writing a resume, communication skills, interviewing skills, voice and diction and<br \/> phone skills also are covered. Videos include other \u201creal-life\u201d training for personal relationships and<br \/> parenting.<\/p>\n<p>The Rand Corporation released a study comparing protracted prevention\/reintegration programs with<br \/> the move politically popular mandated lengthy sentences.
